From an official figure released by the State's Tourism authority, from January to August 2008, Sarawak received 2,023,019 visitors, of which 1,450,928 were foreigners and 572,091 were from Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.

Among the foreign visitors, save for those from Brunei (where regular cross over border visit to the nearby city of Miri or the towns of Limbang and Lawas in Sarawak by car are a norm) and Indonesia (who are visiting from Kalimantan conveniently via land transports), the bulk of the rest of the foreign visitors who were visiting Sarawak, in particular Kuching, were using Kuching International Airport (KIA) as their main gateway.

其实,古晋国际机场贵为“国际”机场在现阶段还是“名不符实”的，只因服务古晋国际机场的国际航空公司现在还寥寥无几，计只有马来西亚的 马航 (MAS) 和 亚航(AirAsia), 新加坡的 胜安航空(SilkAir) 和 虎航(TigerAirways * 20.11.2008启航) ，汶莱的 汶航(Royal Brunei Airlines) 以及 印度尼西亚的 巴达维亚航空(Batavia Air).
Kuching International Airport (KIA), being an "International" airport has still a long way to go to live up to its "International" airport status. 
Currently, Sarawak and in particular Kuching is connected to the outside world by only a handful of airlines, namely MAS (Malaysia Airlines) , which is flying into the State from Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Kota Kinabalu and Singapore, AirAsia which is connecting Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Singapore, SilkAir flying from Singapore to Kuching, Royal Brunei Airlines which flies to Sarawak from Bandar Sri Begawan and Batavia Air flies from Pontianak, Indonesia.
The latest one is Tiger Air which will start flying directly from Singapore to Kuching and Miri on Nov 20, 2008. 
Located 11 km south of Kuching, Kuching International Airport (KIA) is capable of handling 5 million passengers per annum and it is the third largest airport in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
In the year 2007, KIA handled 3,236,468 passengers with a volume of 34,192 Aircraft movements.
